Water currently in your home: The water in most American systems is chlorinated and therefore safe to drink. You may also have still water sources such as wells or groundwater tanks.

Do use water from your hot water tank, pipes and ice cube trays. If possible, pay attention to your local news for damage and contamination reports of broken water or sewage lines from local officials.

To obtain and use water from the pipes in your home:

Turn on your faucets that are highest in your home. This allows air to enter your pipes. A small trickle of water will appear.

Obtain water from the lowest faucet in your home.
